Lomé Container Terminal GSI

LCT, contracted PMI Ltd to perform a number of site investigations for the expansion project of Lomé container terminal. Expansion plans involved the construction of a new harbour basin and quay walls for bigger container vessels. The access channel and turning circle were also dredged to deeper depths to accommodate the container vessels with a deeper draft.

Scope of Works

The complete scope of works was executed in a number of stages across a broad time frame. The complete scope of work was as follows:

Marine Surveys:

  • Bathymetric surveys
  • Side scan sonar surveys
  • Sub-bottom profiling
  • Sediment sampling
  • Magnetometer survey

Offshore Geotechnical:

  • 18no Vibrocores
  • Grab Samples
  • 10no seabed CPTu tests

Onshore Geotechnical:

  • 21no onshore boreholes
  • 85no onshore CPTs

Marine Conditions Surveys:

  • 3no AWAC monitoring buoys installed for 3 month period to obtain local wave, current and tidal data.

Execution

The GSI work was performed using the broad spectrum of PMI’s resources including the following:

  • Multicat Vessel PMI Tiger and Geocorer vibrocore machines
  • 200kN Geomil truck mounted CPT Rig;
  • Fraste Hydraulic Rotary core/percussion drilling rig;
  • Marine survey vessel – PMI Solstice
  • Bathymetric and geophysical surveying equipment
  • Total stations and GPS equipment
  • Professional engineers and support staff

The contract was executed successfully and the quality data obtained from the site investigations helped the Client save a significant portion on the final contract value of the newly constructed port expansion.
